The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation recently announced a total of $326,037 in new grants to 65 non-profit community agencies during the organization’s fall cycle, bringing total grants issued in 2012 to $1,357,249. The Community Foundation was established in 1972 and has returned $13.6 million in grants and scholarships to our community since its inception.
Rosel and Elliot Schewel were recently honored with The Quillian Award at The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Celebration held at the James River Conference Center. The Quillian Award was established to honor Margaret and Bill Quillian who have exemplified philanthropy, endowment giving, and service to community during their lifetime. The Quillian Award is “for lifetime achievement, commitment, and dedication toward the betterment of our Central Virginia communities through the promotion of philanthropy and a keen appreciation for the power and longevity of endowment giving.”
The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation has received a bequest of $172,000 from The Rachel B. and William E. Blandford Charitable Remainder Trust. This gift will establish The Rachel B. and William E. Blandford Fund, an unrestricted fund. Income from the fund will be distributed annually to fund worthwhile programs and services in Central Virginia for years to come.
Mr. Blandford was a career executive with General Electric, while Mrs. Blandford was a teacher in Lynchburg Public Schools for 27 years. Lynchburg became the couple’s adopted home when they moved to the area from upstate New York in the late 1950s. The Blandfords raised their three children (Bill, Gail, and Linda) in Lynchburg.
Lynchburg Native Gives $100,000 To The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation
The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation has received a bequest of $100,000 from the Estate of Samuel H. Williams, Jr.
Mr. Williams, who died on April 5, 2012 at age 91, was born in Lynchburg in 1921, graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1938, and earned his BA in Classical Languages from the University of Virginia in 1942. He served in the Navy during World War II where he earned the rank of Lieutenant. Mr. Williams returned to Lynchburg in 1947 beginning a 40-year career in banking. He worked for First National Bank of Lynchburg (currently SunTrust) and retired as Trust Officer and Vice President.
The Jim Candler Fund for The Pauline F. Maloney Step with Links Program was recently established at The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation with an initial gift of $50,000. The donor wanted to honor Jim Candler and acknowledge his contribution to the Step with Links Program which was established in 1983 to enhance leadership potential for middle school students in Lynchburg City Schools. STEP stands for Striving To Enhance Potential. The program is designed to build self esteem, encourage and support academic achievement, and promote character-building activities. The program has served over 2,000 students since its inception, and today 25 students in each of the three middle schools in Lynchburg are enrolled in the program.
THE Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation DISTRIBUTED $1.3 MILLION IN GRANTS IN 2011The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation recently announced a total of $315,021 in new grants to 56 non-profit community agencies during the organization’s fall cycle, bringing total grants issued in 2011 to $1,388,617. The Community Foundation was established in 1972 and has returned $12.2 million in grants and scholarships to our community since its inception.
MaryJane Dolan was recently elected as Board Chair of The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation. Ms. Dolan is Founder and CFO of Colonial Brokerage House. She is active in the community and serves on a number of community boards including Amazement Square, Centra Health Foundation, Lynchburg College, and United Way. Other officers elected at the December meeting of the Board of Directors include David A. Herrick, Vice Chair; Stuart C. Fauber, President & CEO; and Cheryl C. Hall, Secretary and Office Manager. Other board members include John R. Alford, Jr., Robert L. Finch, Jr., John M. Flippin, William E. Gayle, Jr., Ernie Guill, Hylan T. Hubbard, III, Wallace G. McKenna, Jr., Ellen P. Jamerson, Ellen Nygaard, Augustus A. Petticolas, Jr., James R. Richards, Marc A. Schewel, Massie G. Ware, Jr., and Charles B. White.
William F. Quillian, Jr., retired Randolph Macon Woman’s College President, former Central Fidelity Bank Senior Vice President, and first Executive Director of The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation was recently honored as The Community Foundation’s first recipient of the organization’s Philanthropy Award as a part of the organization’s 40th Anniversary Celebration. The award is very appropriately named The Quillian Award in honor of Margaret and Bill Quillian who have exemplified philanthropy, endowment giving, and service to community during their lifetime.
