(Lynchburg, VA – June 12, 2024) - The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation (“GLCF” or “Foundation”) announced the 2024 winner of its fifth annual $100,000 Century Fund Grant. The $100,000 Century Fund grant winner is Roads to Recovery. Funds awarded will be utilized for furnishings and equipment for a new detox program to open its doors and deliver withdrawal management and recovery services.
Roads to Recovery will soon complete renovations on Dr. Robert Walter Johnson’s historic clinic building at 1001 Fifth Street into an 8-bed withdrawal management program, while preserving the integrity of the facility, honoring Dr. Johnson’s legacy in our community, and establishing a critically needed service that is consistent with the intended use of that facility.
Roads to Recovery’s mission is to assist people to find and sustain recovery from substance use disorders and to eliminate the stigma that prevents people from getting help. They fulfill that mission by building services and supports to fill gaps in the system of care for people with alcohol and other drug addictions.
With the new facility, Roads to Recovery plans to deliver safe, residential detoxification services for at least 300 people in its first year.
Roads to Recovery CEO Sandy Kanehl said, “Our board has recognized for years that detoxification services are the single largest gap in the continuum of care for people with addictions in our community, and addressing this gap is a top priority in our strategic plan. This project differs from any of our previous or ongoing efforts in that it adds a new and critically necessary level of care to our menu of recovery services.”
A total of 25 nonprofits applied for the Century Fund. Finalists for the Century Fund included Park View Community Mission, Beacon of Hope, Jubilee Family Development Center, Friends of the Lynchburg Public Library, and Bower Center of the Arts.
A press conference and check presentation will take place on June 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at 1001 Fifth Street, and the media are invited to attend.
Since 1972, the GLCF has granted over $33 million to a wide variety of local nonprofit organizations including human services, animal welfare, arts, education, and historical preservation organizations.
Now in its fifth year, the Century Fund grant offers a $100,000 grant to a local nonprofit to support a large project that is transformational for the organization and our community. Over $2 million was raised in a special campaign to be able to offer this special grant. Organizations may apply for the grant annually in February, and recipients are decided by a committee of the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation.
Past recipients of the Century Fund grant have been the Free Clinic of Central Virginia, Camp Kum-Ba-Yah Nature Center, James River Association, and Lynchburg Grows.
In addition to the Century Fund, the GLCF offers scholarships for local students and two competitive grant cycles for nonprofits annually in the fall and spring. The next grant cycle will be offered in September 2024. Last year, the GLCF awarded over $2.2 million to 211 charitable organizations.
