(Lynchburg, VA – June 28, 2023) - The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation (GLCF or Foundation) announced today the recipients of its Spring 2023 grants.
This week, 76 local nonprofit organizations received letters notifying them that their grant applications were partially or fully funded by the GLCF. A total of $529,042 is being awarded from funds administered by the Foundation.
Birth in Color LYH is a first-time grant recipient. Their Grant Development & Fundraising Support Coordinator Miosha McDaniel said, "This is the first time Birth in Color has applied, so I am extremely thankful and excited. It feels really special and honorable to know that the GLCF believes in the work that we are doing in this community for birthing people and their families. To have financial support allows Birth in Color to further our reach with training more doulas of color, and supporting families of color. We appreciate being considered, our story being heard, and the financial support to continue doing this life-changing work."
Birth in Color LYH provides pregnant people services to ensure a safe journey to parenthood and make better decisions for their children, linking maternal justice to reproductive justice.
The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation was founded in 1972 and is concluding the celebration of its 50th anniversary this month. The GLCF's mission is to enhance the quality of life for those living in the City of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell.
In order to receive a grant, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations must submit an application describing a current project in need of funding, as well as a project budget and current financial statements. A Distribution Committee composed of members of the GLCF Board of Directors determines which projects receive funding after carefully reviewing the applications.
"We are ecstatic to be able to support these important projects that are serving critical needs in our community," said Kathryn C. Yarzebinski, President & CEO of the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation. "GLCF donors make these grants possible. We now have 319 endowed funds created and supported by donors, and these funds generate millions in annual charitable support for our community."
Examples of some of this year's funded projects include: STEM/STREAM education programming, food distribution, community gardening, art enrichment for individuals with disabilities, a veteran memorial garden, medical transport and equipment, and community outreach programs on literacy, history, and the arts.
Since 1972, the GLCF has granted nearly $31 million to a wide variety of local nonprofit organizations including human services, animal welfare, arts, education, and historical preservation organizations.
The GLCF offers two grant cycles annually: fall and spring. The next grant deadline is September 15, 2023. In 2022, the GLCF awarded $2,092,907 to 185 charitable organizations.
