James River GLCF Lynchburg Tomorrow

The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation (GLCF) is proud to announce its involvement in the newly launched Lynchburg Tomorrow.

Lynchburg Tomorrow was launched in 2021, in a partnership between the University of Lynchburg (UoL) and local city officials. This new program connects areas of need and potential in the city with The UoL’s unique resources, such as the leadership and expertise of their faculty, staff and students.

This new organization looks to join organizations, agencies and nonprofits together to help bring affordable health care and access to healthy food to the Greater Lynchburg community. Centra Health first identified these needs and has been added to the City of Lynchburg’s strategic plan.

The GLCF will be assisting with the food security evaluation project. By providing funds to Red Truck Ministries, Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Lynchburg Grows and Lynchburg Daily Bread, GLCF has stepped up in a major way.

Improving access to healthy food “is just one example of the benefits Lynchburg Tomorrow could provide,” Bill Bodine, GLCF president, said. He also added that another example is the untapped potential of getting faculty, staff and students involved through the research center, so they can help assess how resources are distributed. “I am not aware of this type of thing ever having been done here.”

This initiative is even more than just research and data. Lynchburg Tomorrow is about action and moving forward as a community. Recently, they received 40,000 pounds of canned goods and bulk food donated by the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Area nonprofits will distribute the food.

The mission of The Community Foundation is to enhance the quality of life in the communities served by the establishment of permanent endowments for the City of Lynchburg and the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell, with income distributed annually to charitable organizations within the community. Lynchburg Tomorrow helps us do just that.

“The foundation is proud to be involved with Lynchburg Tomorrow,” Bodine, GLCF president, said. “We see it as an opportunity to provide a bridge between the resources available through the University and local nonprofits working hard to make this area an even better place to live and work.”
